Color: brown, dark reddish brown or black in color
Size: 1/16 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch

Region: Found throughout most of the United States

Important Considerations:

  • Swarms of the ants occur July through September
  • As their name suggests, these ants are usually found in moist areas.
  • They make colonies in areas where the wood is already decaying.
  • These ants feed on sweets and meats and other insects.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Inside, they are usually found in moist, rotting wood such as in bathroom walls or crawl spaces. Outside you can find them in rotting logs and stumps.
