Scientific Name: Formica

Identification:

Color: pale yellow, reddish brown or black

Important Considerations:

  • They get their name from their preference for outdoor nesting sites, including wooded areas.
  • They can also go by the name of Thatcher Ant, as their mounds are thatched with plant materials.
  • They rarely nest inside of homes, but will venture indoors in search of sweets.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Nests are found around small shrubs and rocks, sidewalk cracks and around foundational walls.
