Harvester Ant

Category: Ants

Scientific Name: Pogonomyrmex spp.

Identification:

Color: Vary in color from brown to black to red or orange

Size: ¼ to ½ and inch

Region: Found in Florida and west of the Mississippi River

Important Considerations:

  • The harvester ant gets its name from the fact that its main food source is harvesting seeds.
  • Harvester ants have very painful stings and have even been known to kill animals that disturb their nests.
  • These ants clear away vegetation around their nests, which can cause bare spots in lawns

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Harvester ants are found outside the home, most likely in the lawn area. You will be able to determine their location by their mounds they make as their nest and the lack of vegetation around it.
