Identification:

Color: Dull blackish gray with red eyes. They have 3 black stripes on their thorax and a checkerboard pattern on their abdomen.
Size: 1/4 – 7/16 of an inch

Region: Found in the United States and Canada

Important Considerations:

  • The larvae develop in spoiling meat and decaying flesh.
  • Some species develop in fecal material or garbage, which causes a human health concern.
  • Some species can cause intestinal myiasis in humans

 

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Adults are found outside plants or decaying materials/flesh. Dead rodents or birds and dog feces are common sources of these flies.
