Fruit Fly

Category: Flies

Scientific Name: Drosophila species

Identification:

Color: Tan

Size: ⅛ inch long

Region: Found throughout the United States

Lifespan: 40-50 days

Important Considerations:

  • Fruit flies can spread disease and contaminate food with bacteria and pathogens.
  • These flies are drawn towards decaying matter and show an affinity for fruits and fermented drinks.
  • When females breed, they lay 400-500 eggs. These eggs hatch only 24 hours later, so populations can be hard to control.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Like other flies, fruit flies eat matter that is decaying. These flies in particular are drawn towards decaying food. They are often found in kitchens and restaurants because of this.
