Identification:

Color: Body is usually black or dark brown

Size: Body is 6 mm long

Region: Found throughout the US and Canada

Important Considerations:

  • Adults tend to live anywhere from 38 to 62 days
  • Adults mate shortly after emergence and egg laying begins 5-12 days later
  • Female eggs hatch in about 4-12 days
  • These types of flies are associated with moist decaying organic matter
  • Often where there are active fruit flies, you will find Small Dung flies as well

 

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

You will find Small Dung Flies in moist, decaying matter such as dung, carrion, fungi, seaweed, refuse, compost, and more. If these flies are around your structures, you may find them in places like the bottom of trash cans or dumpsters. Other places they may breed or have activity, is anywhere that is moist, such as filthy floor drains and more. They may also try to habituate in moist trash or dog poo, so it is important to keep areas around your home dry and clean.
