Scientific Name: Hylotrupes Bajulus

Identification: 

Color: Brownish black, but covered in numerous short gray hairs 

Size: The body is long and slightly flattened in form, reaching full growth at 5/8- 1”

Region: Found in the United States and throughout the world

Important Considerations:

  • These beetles attack only softwoods, primarily pine and only the sapwood
  • They attack both structural timber and lumber
  • Primarily wood less than 10 years old would be attacked

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Inside, look for exit holes in your walls. Listen for chewing sounds during the day in the basement and interior walls. At night listen for sounds in the attic and exterior walls.
