Chipmunk

Category: Rodents

Scientific Name: Tamias

Identification:

Color: Gray to reddish-brown with white stripes on back

Size: 7-11 inches long

Region: Found throughout the United States

Lifespan: 3-8 years

Important Considerations:

  • Chipmunks form long, deep burrows that can pose problems to decks and other structures resting on your lawn.
  • The diet of a chipmunk is vast. It will eat nearly anything, but its diet is primarily composed of seeds, vegetables, nuts, fruit, and buds.
  • Chipmunks especially love to eat birdseed, and many people unknowingly attract chipmunks by having bird feeders on their property.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

In the wild, chipmunks make their homes inside trees. This can also be true if you have chipmunks on your property. Near humans, however, they may also choose to burrow underneath homes or find ways inside attics or wall voids.
