Cellar Spider

Category: Spiders

Scientific Name: Pholcidae

Identification:

Color: Pale yellow, light brown, or gray

Size: 2-8 mm long

Region: Found in the United States and Canada

Lifespan: 2 years

Important Considerations:

  • Females usually produce 3 egg sacs that can contain up to 60 eggs each.
  • Unlike most spider species, the cellar spider continuously builds its web. This can lead to very large webs in a short period of time.
  • These spiders have an interesting habit of vibrating their body when disturbed. This vibrating of themselves and their nest makes it look like the spider has disappeared.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Cellar spiders prefer areas that have a high relative humidity. This makes areas such as cellars, basements, and crawl spaces, garages, barns, sheds, warehouses, sink cabinets, and bath traps appealing homes for cellar spiders. They like to build their nests in corners near open doors.
