European Hornet

Category: Stinging

Scientific Name: Vespa crabro

Identification:

Color: Brown with yellow stripes

Size: 20-35 mm long

Region: Found throughout the world

Lifespan: 12-22 days

Important Considerations:

  • A nest commonly features 200-400 workers.
  • European hornets are predators. They feed on grasshoppers, flies, yellowjackets, and honey bees.
  • Workers frequently girdle twigs and branches to gain access to the sap. This girdling can lead to the death of shrubs and trees.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

European hornets are a forest species, so they don’t often come into contact with humans. If they are found on your property, their nests are frequently built in hollow trees, abandoned bee hives, out buildings, house walls, attics, or barns.
