Mud Dauber

Category: Stinging

Scientific Name: Trypoxylon politum

Identification:

Color: Mostly black with some pale yellow markings

Size: ½ of an inch up to an inch in length

Region: Found throughout the United States

Important Considerations:

  • The name Mud Dauber comes from the fact that they build their nests in the mud.
  • Mud Daubers do not defend their nests and stings from them are very rare.
  • Even though Mud Daubers don’t sting much, once they abandon their nests, the nest is often taken over by more aggressive insects.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Mud Dauber nests are made of mud into 1 inch tubes side by side. They look for sheltered areas such as eaves, pipes, sheds and porches to build their nests.
