Identification:

Color: Black with bright colors such as red, yellow, orange, or white

Size: 1/8- 7/8 of an inch

Region: Found throughout the United States

Important Considerations:

  • Contrary to what their name says, Velvet Ants are wasps, not ants.
  • The females are wingless, bright colored and fuzzy, which is where they got their name.
  • They have a very powerful sting.

 

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

They are usually found on bare or sandy ground near other ground nesting bees wasps. They rarely enter structures, but will on occasion to feed on other insects.
