Identification:

Color: Starts off White and goes to Dark brown or Black

Size: Body is 3/8 long (9mm), including the wings

Region: Found in the United States and throughout the world

Important Considerations:

  • They eat mostly springwood and leave harder summer wood
  • They swarm during the springtime, but smaller swarms sometimes go until winter
  • The estimated foraging area is anywhere from 3-12,000 sq ft
  • They actively feed in living trees and free-standing poles, in addition to buildings

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Colonies are usually located in trees, different building structures, and mud tubes in the ground/soil. They can enter your house through cracks less than 1/16 wide. Wherever there is moisture, colonies have been known to be able to survive.
