Subterranean Termite

Category: Termites

Scientific Name: Family Rhinotermitidae

Identification:

Color: Dark brown (alates) or creamy-white (workers and soldiers)

Size: ⅛ inch long

Region: Found throughout the United States

Lifespan: 1-2 years

Important Considerations:

  • Subterranean termites are the most destructive termite variety. Their strong mandibles can bite even the tiniest bits of wood.
  • Over time, a subterranean termite infestation can lead to a complete building collapse.
  • Termites primarily feed on wood but will also eat anything containing cellulose such as paper and plants-based products.

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

Termites live in colonies buried under the ground. Pinpointing the colony’s exact location can be nearly impossible at times.
