Badgers

Category: Wildlife

Scientific Name: Mustelide

Identification:

Color: Shades of black, white, and brown

Size: Body usually grows up to 35 inches

Region: Found throughout the world

Important Considerations:

  • Badgers lifespan is about 4-10 years in the wild
  • Badgers are mainly omnivores and tend to eat things like insects, fruits, and sometimes reptiles
  • These animals are especially clean, and build a communal toilet away from where they eat and sleep
  • They have excellent hearing and sense of smell, but they have small eyes so they can’t see very well
  • Badgers don’t normally tend to hibernate but they can sleep in their dens when it’s cold for up to days at a time

Where to Find Them on Your Property?

You will find Badgers in open habitats such as grasslands, meadows, fields, prairies, and deserts. They also like to make habitats in farmlands and sometimes the edge of woodlands. Badgers’ homes are built underground however, in a network of tunnels and chambers called a “sett.” Badgers are a pest because they may dig up your backyard or garden to find food when they’re hungry.
